The Effect of Industrial Diversity on Unemployment Rate: Evidence from the Japanese City Level

Abstract


This paper uses the city-level panel data from 1990 to 2010 to test the impact of industrial diversity on unemployment rate. First, the results show that industrial diversity in the whole country is declining. Second, there is a negative correlation between diversity and urban unemployment rate. Third, the degree of specialization in different industries has different effects on unemployment.
