The Ideology of Nature Revering and Thrift Advocating from Jiao Yu in the Qin Bamboo Slips and the Concept of Low Carbon in Modern Fashion
Abstract
Making Clothes on the Qin bamboo slips unearthed from the midstream area of Changjiang River – the Han settlement is an authentic record of costume cutting skill in the Qin Dynasty. This is the first time the cutting technique of JIAO YU was found. Classic Research on SHEN YI and Examine SHEN YI summarizes the textual research of early cutting skills for SHEN YI in the Qing Dynasty, where the cutting technique of JIAO JIE was mentioned. JIAO YU and JIAO JIE are essentially the same cutting technique, without any waste. This technique doesn’t exist in neither traditional Han ethnic group clothing nor modern fashion product but is found in Tibetan robes. Moreover, the technique has been inherited in the Tibetan areas even today. These techniques are the soul of Chinese traditional costume culture. They are not only the direct expression for spirit respect and thrift wisdom, but also the lifeblood for consistent inheritance of Tibetan clothing. Compared to the ideology of nature revering and thrift advocating from JIAO YU, the prevailing design concept of low carbon in the modern fashion world seems to be impractical. Our aesthetics of intervention with too much decoration appears to be far less clever than our ancestors.
