Chinese Politeness (Limao) – Theory and Practice

Abstract

In this paper I will first attempt to confront two of the main ways of thinking about Chinese politeness (limao) as they are presented in contemporary scholarship. Subsequently, relying on this theoretical background and my own research, I will try to establish what it is exactly that allows the notion of limao to remain a crucial factor even in modern Chinese society.
