Abstract

In this study, wet air oxidation of pharmaceutical sludge was investigated through a pilot-scale reaction system. Oxygen gas was used as oxidant. The effects of reaction parameters on the process performance were discussed, such as temperature, reaction time, and oxygen supply. The results showed that the volatile suspended solids (VSS) removal rates were above 90%, and the total chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rates were above 60%, which indicated that wet air oxidation is an ideal process for the degradation of pharmaceutical sludge.
